History:
Mahindra & Mahindra Limited: is part of Mahindra, an automotive group, farm equipment, financial services, trade and logistics, automotive components, after-market, and infrastructure IT conglomerate. The company was founded in 1945 as Mahindra & Mohammed. Later, after the partition of India, Ghulam Mohammad returned to Pakistan and became the first finance minister of the new state. Therefore, the name was changed from Mahindra & Mahindra Mahindra & Mohammed in 1948.
Originally set up for making general purpose utility vehicles, Mahindra & Mahindra (M & M) was first known for assembly of the iconic Jeep in India. The company later branched into the manufacture of light commercial vehicles (LCVs) and agricultural tractors, quickly converts from being a manufacturer of army vehicles and tractors to major automobile with a global market in greater. Currently, M & M is the leader in the segment for commercial vehicles (UV) in India, with its lighthouse UV, the Scorpio (known as Mahindra Goa Italy).
& M M is the largest SUV maker in India.
Mahindra & Mahindra has expanded from being a manufacturer of army vehicles at one of the leading manufacturers of automobiles and tractors. It has acquired sites in China and the United Kingdom, and has three assembly plants in the United States. It has established partnerships with international companies like Renault SA, France and International Truck and Engine Corporation, USA.
M & M has a global presence and its products are exported to many countries. Its global subsidiaries include Mahindra Europe Srl. based in Italy, Mahindra USA Inc., Mahindra South Africa and Mahindra (China) Tractor Co. Ltd.
It is the third largest tractor company in the world. She is also the largest tractor manufacturer in India with a sustained position of market leader for nearly 25 years. It designs, develops, manufactures and sells tractors and agricultural tools. Mahindra (China) Tractor Co. Ltd. manufactures tractors for the Chinese market increasingly huge and is a hub for tractor exports to the United States and other Western countries. M & M has a 100% subsidiary, Mahindra USA, which assembles products for the U.S. market.
The Indian firm enters in the car segment with Logan in April 2007 as part of the Mahindra Renault joint venture. M & M will enter the segment of heavy trucks with Mahindra International, a joint venture with International Truck, USA.
The automotive division manufactures a wide range of vehicles including MUVs, LCVs and three wheelers. It offers over 20 models including new generation multi-utility vehicles like the Scorpio and the Bolero.
At the recent auto show in Delhi, officials of Mahindra said the company continues an aggressive expansion product that will launch several new platforms and vehicles over the next three years, including new entry SUV designed for five passengers and powered by a small turbocharged engine. Later, in 2008, it will be unveiled the new SUV Ingenio, which will be joined in 2009 by a pickup derivative. In early 2008, Mahindra started its first operations CKD abroad with the launch of the Mahindra Scorpio in Egypt in partnership with the Bavarian Auto Group. This was soon followed by the assembly facility in Brazil. The vehicles are assembled at the factory Bramont in Manaus, in particular in body styles Scorpio Pick UPS single and double cab pick-ups' and utilitaures sports.
Reputation Institute based in the United States recently ranked Mahindra among the top 10 Indian companies in its "Global 200: a list of the best known companies in the world."
Mahindra is also willing to sell the Scorpio SUV and pickup next year in North America, through an independent distributor, Global Vehicles USA, based in Alpharetta, Georgia.
