MasterCard opens its platform to Developers

After several months of testing internally, MasterCard announces the opening in beta, of MasterCard Developer Zone, a portal for developers .

  • The "offers ," capitalizing on the network of merchant partners to provide access to promotional offers, coupons ... with opportunities for research on various criteria including location.
  • The "localization " which opens the database geotagged ATMs accepting MasterCard cards and, in Canada and the United States, the base of merchants accepting contactless payment (with PayPass).
For all these services, the interfaces available to developers are simple to use and standards-based (REST / XML) for use with all programming languages, web, PC or mobile, a simple Internet connection is necessary.

With this announcement, MasterCard is a great step forward in an area where it was most often used to see "new actors" (eg PayPal or BankSimple ) that established institutions. Openness and data services to outside developers is nevertheless an approach that has already proven itself in other areas, including promote and develop innovation .

For banks, holding data repositories and extraordinary range of exclusive services, this model is unfortunately still excluded, and the developers 'creative' should turn to alternative actors (including aggregation platforms, such as Yodlee or soon in France Linxo ) to devise new solutions. When will we wake up?
